I really love the cheat sheet. My co-author and I have been doing Veganuary this month, and we’ve had multiple discussions on how to get enough protein. The cheat sheet is great!
Veganuary!! I love it Ellen! Heading over to your neighbourhood now to have a drive around!
In truth, before I started researching this piece, I didn’t realise the trickery needed to ensure you’re getting all nine amino acids at every meal with a plant-based diet.
I didn’t cover it in depth here because I would like to cover the science deeper than this piece allowed!
This is a valuable addition. Great for Veganuarians and people (like me!) who veer towards plant-based eating but still want to power up with protein. Thanks for the prompt, Ellen! X
I have been eating Vega chocolate protein powder to meet my needs. But since the recent lead and cadmium scare, I changed my diet and am incorporating many of your suggestions. Thanks for the easy consolidation of information -- so handy to have!
I'm so glad you found this useful Barb. Protein is too important not to get right, yet most of us are stumbling around in the gloaming! Thank you so much for highlighting the issues that have been raised by the Clean Label Project investigation. around lead and cadmium in vegan chocolate protein powders. It's a very good call. I will add a note about this to the article.
Thanks Melissa, I’m so glad you found it helpful. I’ve been using protein powder for over 20 years and I’ve only ever used IsoWhey. My doctor recommended it way— whey? :-)— back in the day. Its first listed ingredient is whey protein concentrate ✅ (look for whey isolate, egg white, or casein as the first ingredient) and it offers 22g of protein a serve ✅ (look for at least 20g protein per serving). It’s also delicious. The manufacturer is Australian Whey Vitality and I am not sure if it is available elsewhere.
The product is great. But I'm not a big fan of their positioning as 'weight management' and meal replacement. My doctor saw it as an excellent supplement which is how I use it.
I notice that there is an Isowhey in the States but it does not seem to be the same company. To be honest, I think if you follow the advice in the article, you should be able to find one that ticks the two key boxes (first listed ingredient / and 20+g of protein per serve) in your local 'hood. Where are you located?
Late commenter here! I’m curious about eggs. I notice they’re not listed in the last cheat sheet or mentioned (?). Do you not recommend eggs as a protein source?
This is a great guide Brodee! I'm going to print these cheat sheets and put them on my fridge. I'd love it if you had some detailed tips on what exercises to do, or that you like particularly, that help with osteoporosis. Maybe an idea for a future post? Just putting it out there. ;)

Another one on the big pile for the future!
It takes a lot of planning.
UPDATE: Gritty, useful plant-based info added! https://brodee.substack.com/i/155727548/what-do-the-black-stars-mean

Such a useful, information-packed post! Thank you, Brodee.
Thanks Julie. I must say it was fun to write!

This is so helpful! What brand of protein powder do you recommend?

THANKYOU! That was “whey” helpful - haha! Are you based in Australia?
Do you have a photo of the product you use? I’m searching for it on Google - thx
Touche! 😂 yes, I’m in Sydney … just trying to add a pic 🤔
Let's try this :-) https://isowhey.com.au/?srsltid=AfmBOopai4JG4N0Y75ZUYEAEAurtcczR9uItw6TtweSTytpgun7bNaVU

Ok Thankyou! I’ll have to do some investigating. I’m in The States, North Carolina specifically.
Oh lovely! Let me know how you go!
