The new go-to guide to healthy joyful ageing for women 50+. A gentle science-backed journey to growing younger as we grow (gloriously) older.

From award-winning magazine editor, Brodee Myers-Cooke

This is 60, on our first post-lockdown road trip - to the beautiful Hunter Valley vineyards, 90 minutes north of Sydney.

Hello, and a big welcome!

It’s wonderful to be here with you.

I'm Brodee Myers-Cooke, journalist, author, magazine editor and former podcaster. At 63 years old, I'm coming to you fresh from three decades in magazine publishing where I worked at the helm of some of Australia's biggest lifestyle magazines, including the top food brand, taste.com.au.

Service journalism has always been my thing. Now, having left traditional media, I'm thrilled to finally be bringing it here, on the wide open road of Substack. This is where I see myself now, doing my most important work, on my own terms, and ad free.

What is Road Trip to Younger?

Focused on women 50+, Road Trip to Younger is a magazine for thriving ageing and a travel guide, all in one. This is where I put on my journalist hat to turn the science of healthy longevity into a roadmap. Then I take it a step further: I hand you the keys and ease you into the driver's seat of your own aging.

Each weekly newsletter focuses on powerhouse habits (aka destinations) that, when visited consistently, bring you the biggest benefits. This is how, together, we'll build what I call 'Joyspan' – the longest, most pleasurable healthspan possible.

While Road Trip to Younger started as a fun metaphor, it’s evolved into a way of life. Since my 40s, I’d casually noodled around with whatever ‘sciency thing’ I happened to be reading in the health and ageing space. Suddenly, I was calling it ‘test driving’.

Now, over time, Road Trip to Younger has ballooned into a world of roadmaps, signposts and destinations. It even has its own compass to guide our way.

The Road Trip to Younger Age-Well Compass points the way to the eight key guiding principles for healthy joyful ageing for women 50+.

In terms of my health regime, I’m not even close to perfect, and run off the road from time to time, but the road trip keeps me on track more often than not. The proof of success is that I feel great—certainly better and younger than I did throughout most of my 40s and 50s.

The big surprise is the revolution in my mental clarity and the way I think. "Hey, it's just a road trip" is now my daily mantra when things don’t go to plan.

It’s amazing how this small mind shift can rewire your screwy thinking. For me, and I hope for you too, the road tripper’s adaptive mindset seems to go a long way to quietening that particular brand of self-criticism we seem to take on as women…

Blow a tyre on the bend—no big deal! Accidentally drive around for half the day in reverse—don’t stress! Just like a road trip, tomorrow’s a new day, a fresh start.

About me

I live with my husband David on the east coast of Australia, near Manly, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. I'm a mother of four and grandmother of one in a happy blended family.

I’m loving this 60s thing. Sure. There’s my dicky right knee, a screwy elbow, my feet and toenails (oh dear God), what the !@#% is going on with my hair… and blah blah, censored, blah blah—you know, the usual!

But it’s a real turnaround from seven years ago. That's when I experienced what you'd call, in road-tripping lingo, a nasty back-ending from aging: a devastating fracture, an osteoporosis diagnosis, several months of debilitation. Things were bleak!

I now call it my 'lucky break'. It woke me up from being asleep and the wheel, and helped my drive out of the danger zone, and it's the big reason I’m here—to spread the word about the power of getting into the driver's seat of your own aging.

The road rule I live by is 'keep it real', with minimal self-denial. I never say no to cake, regularly fantasise about cheese, and a glass of champagne with friends is my happy place.

I love all things mid-century, including dirty-throated classic muscle cars— unfortunately for me, but luckily for the planet, their place in my life is purely metaphorical.

Thank you for coming by!

I’d love to welcome you into our supportive community of amazing women turning ageing upside down, one destination at a time.
